Basket
Number One
5 Stars are needed and a strip for the handle. Take 2 stars and glue two flat points of one star overlapping the two matching flat points of the second. |
|
Continue with 4 stars attached to each other.
Loop the opposite ends of the 4-star string, overlapping the corners as shown on the right, and glue.
Overhead view of the finished sides of the basket.
Glue the bottom star to a side star overlapping corners.
Continue to glue each side pair of flat points to the matching bottom pair. In the picture, opposite sides have been attached to the bottom. Next, the remaining points of the other two sides should be glued to the bottom.
The handle is a paper strip about 10 times as long as the strip widths. (A star made of 1 inch width strips would have a handle 1 inch by 10 inches.) The handle is glued inside of opposite star points. In the picture, one end of the strip has been glued. The other end is then glued to the opposite side as shown below. |

5 Stars are needed. Cut all the ends of three stars and all but one pair of ends of two stars. The ends cut should be cut no longer past the points than the width of the strips. Fold in the same direction the short pieces at the points to become the corners of the box. |
|
The pairs that are left uncut may be used in the final steps for the handle. If they are not long enough or if you prefer to cut them off, use another strip or strips for the handle.
Here are the 5 cut stars. The star shown on top and bottom can be clipped as shown since these will be top edges of the basket. (Or they could be cut off as the others and folded into the star fold to form a top straight edge.)
Apply glue to a side star to glue to the bottom star.
Again apply glue to glue another side to the bottom and to the existing side. In the picture on the right, the top star will be first pressed against the star on the left (slipping the end corners of the left star into the folds of the points on the outside star if possible). Then the bottom star is glued to the upper star in the picture.
Since this is the first time I have tried this, it appears I switched sides to glue the new star to the bottom star. Luckily the glue dries clear.
Glue the third side to existing side and bottom. Again it would be nice if the side corners are slipped into the point folds of the adjacent star.
Glue the forth side to existing 2 sides and bottom.
I crossed opposite strips and glued them together. Then crossed remaining strips and glued them.
Top view.
Again, you could have made a handle from a separate strip. |

Basket Number Three
11 stars are needed. But the four 3-D "pyramid" parts are made only on one side of every star. The four strips on the other side are cut off. This leaves a smooth (basket weave) side on the inside of the basket and handle. 5 stars (each with one flat side) made with 1 inch wide strips are needed for the basket. 6 stars (each with one flat side) made with 1/2 inch wide strips are needed for the handle.
|
|
For the large stars, glue two flat points of
one star overlapping the two matching flat points of the second and
continue for 4 of the stars to form the sides.
Likewise, for all 6 small stars, glue together to form a handle to be added in the last step.
|
|
Loop the opposite ends of the 4-star string, overlapping the corners, and glue. Overhead view of the finished sides of the basket are shown on the right.
Glue the bottom star to a side star overlapping the corners. Continue to glue each side pair of flat points to the matching bottom pair of the bottom star.
Glue one end of the handle of six small stars to one pair of flat points on one of the sides of the basket. Since the side star is much larger, the handle's flat points are glued inside the large side flat points, the "pyramids" on the handle face upward as the other end of the handle is glued to the opposite side of the basket. |
